After a huge local response, Shawty lo’s first single “They Know”, from his just released debut album “Units in the City” (D4L/Asylum), has become a national phenomenon. The video clip is in heavy rotation on MTV and BET and is all over radio. Shawty is a member of the group D4L known for their novelty hit “Laffy Taffy” which is actually in the guiness book of world records for ringtone downloads. Shawty lo’s success is from hard work and dedication, the support of the streets and the strong team around him.

I had a chance to see his camp in action personally when I accompanied my producer Balis Beats to New York who actually with his partner Rkitec beats, produced the “They Know” track.

I witnessed New Yorkers embrace the whole crew and show Shawty love the way only New York can. Shawty also chose to film portions of his MTV taping on the streets to show the fans that he is an approachable artist. Originating from the rough confines of the Bowen Homes projects in the Bankhead section of Atlanta Georgia, Shawty lo is a legend in the city. The success of his debut single is just a testament to that. What’s even more phenomenal is the barrage of unofficial remixes from across the country from West Coast legend E-40 to Brooklyn O.G. Maino, who put the official New York version together featuring himself Lil Kim, and Busta Rhymes. The official remix features Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Plies, and Lil Wayne.

Be on the lookout for more from Shawty lo in the months to come as he prepares to drop his second single and possibly a video for the star studded “They Know” remix. Also be sure to check Shawty lo on the “Raw Report” his clip is called “The Real Bankhead story”. That clip was one of the grittiest I’ve ever witnessed. Shawty lo is definitely one to watch for.
